The senior rugby section celebrated its 2nd season with an incredible league and cup double. Building from the 1st season where a respectable mid table finish was recorded, this season the turnout per game rose significantly, in direct contrast to the average age of the players which dropped sharply as more youth came into the side. This gave the side a much more dynamic game style and the stats for the season improved across every aspect - more tries scored, less tries conceded and only 1 game lost in the entire season.
In achieving a league campaign of played 14, won 11, drew 2 and lost 1, star players were Ty Turner (fly half), Tim McCreadie (prop), LT Nixon (Scrum half), Arnie Taen (scrum half / wing) and Bob Crozier (2nd row). The league campaign ended with a nail biting 8-8 draw against Police at Boundary Street where only a last play try from Tim McCreadie secured the league title in front of a loud and partisan Pirate crowd.
In the cup campaign, a walkover in the quarter final was then followed up by another nail biting win in the semi final against Typhoons 21-20. This brought us a final against our season nemesis, Police. After strolling to a 12-0 half time lead, the 2nd half produced a backs-to-the-wall defensive effort and a 15-10 win was secured, prompting a players’ night of biblical proportions!
Player of the Year was Ty Turner, Young Player of the Year was Arnie Taen and Pirate of the Year was Randal Leonard. Building from last year’s single youth and mini rugby representative in the senior side, this year we fielded 5 and the future pipeline of players is looking very strong. Any season wrap up wouldn’t be complete without a mention to our incredible support network of wives, girlfriends, families and friends who have provided invaluable motivation and help throughout the season.
And of course the final word has to be for our inspiration, the Esky of Destiny.
