Please collect your copy and when we send out our survey, let us know what you think.  It's been lots of fun and lots of work putting it together but we think it looks awesome and hope you all enjoy it as well.

HKRFU Official Senior Rugby Season Welcome

On behalf of the Board of Directors and executive staff it is my great pleasure to welcome all players, coaches, referees, administrators and supporters to the start of the 2014/15 Senior Domestic Season.

Carrying on from last year’s highly successful competition I am sure there is even more excitement in the months ahead.

I am delighted to report that Hong Kong Rugby will set a new participation record this season with 81 teams representing 17 clubs competing across 11 levels of competition for both men and women. Over 1,700 senior players will be involved on a week-to-week basis.

Following on from last seasons success, ‘Super Saturdays’ will return to the schedule in 2014, offering fans the opportunity to see all six Premiership teams in action against each other on the same day at the same venue. In addition to two Premiership Super Saturdays in the coming season, the HKRFU will also hold a Super Saturday event for Women’s teams and for the Championship clubs.

The official kick off of the HKRFU’s 62nd annual domestic season will be on September 27 with the first Premiership

Super Saturday together with a full round of matches in all the senior men’s and women’s leagues.

As ever, there is a busy slate of pre-season activities and international competitions, including the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series qualifiers on Friday and Saturday, September 12-13, 2014 at Shek Kip Mei, before our men’s and women’s sevens teams head off to South Korea for the 17th Asian Games at end September.

Last year’s competition reached new heights in competitiveness and support and the HKRFU looks forward to continued growth in the season ahead.

The Board and Staff of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union are pleased to wish all players, participants, supporters and clubs a successful and enjoyable season. We look forward to seeing you around the pitches of Hong Kong in the coming months.

    Yours in Rugby,

    Pieter Schats
Chairman, Hong Kong Rugby Football Union

August  Register Now for the 2014/2015 Season
Register Now for the DB Pirates 2014/2015 Season

For MEN'S & WOMEN'S RUGBY, MINI & YOUTH RUGBY, MINI HOCKEY, NETBALL and SOCIAL

This year we have had to restructure some aspects of the membership, and registration fees – this largely reflects the fact that over the past few seasons the Club’s operating costs (particularly cost of playing kit, pitch hire and buses) have risen significantly. Despite our best efforts, developing the Club’s budget has proven a challenging exercise when – as with last season – we neither had use of the Siena pitch at the start of the season, nor knew what the hourly usage charge would be.

The result of the past few seasons is that the Club has had to dip deeply into reserves, which we have been building to provide the cash flow required during the season, and to try to accumulate funds to spend on player and coaching development.

You will notice that the registration fees vary across the different sections of the Club, to more accurately reflect the costs involved in running that section. This year your Executive Committee has spent the best part of 150 – 200 hours of time developing what is the most robustly developed budget I have seen in my years on the Club Committee.

    Registration fees

We have attempted to keep increases to registration fees as close to an inflation linked increase, we have negotiated some keen pricing from our new kit supplier (Kukri) in order to help manage this aspect of operating costs.

    Bus costs

The increase in bus usage and costs (last season the Club booked 297 buses!) has risen sharply over the past 3 to 4 years and is now around half a million dollars (by far the biggest single operating expense). As a result, we have had to take the decision to restructure the way the Club manages buses. We will continue to provide support to teams to book buses. However, for most sections bus costs will now have to be paid by teams travelling out of DB to festivals, league games or tournaments. Those who train outside DB because there is insufficient space on Siena will have some exemptions from bus costs – your section head, head coach and team manager will be given full details as the final budget is signed-off.

We are exploring the use of Octopus to make payment for buses easier for members.

    Social Membership

We have noticed a continued drop-off of parental supervision (or nomination of an alternate guardian), which puts additional responsibility on the age group coaches in the event of an injury or the player needing special attention. In the past we have asked members to ensure their child’s coach is aware of who is the “responsible adult for their child at either training or a tournament / festival / league game. However, this is consistently not done, and we have faced a few occasions when a child has needed attention, which typically removes one of the coaches from being able to look after the wider group.

This is both unfair on the coaches, the wider group of children and especially the distressed child. And the problem would be further exacerbated if we had to call an ambulance to take the child to hospital.

We can no longer accept this responsibility of supervision for any player who has not attained the age of 16.

Over the past few seasons the Club has started a Social Membership. This attracts various discounts from the Club’s many generous affiliates. Your Executive Committee has had to take the painful decision that every family who has a child member (under 16 attained at 1st September 2014) must also have a parent (or alternate guardian) as a separate member of the Club. This will take the form of a Social Membership for HKD500.

    Summary

We appreciate these changes represent a significant change from the previous membership structure and fees. We remain confident, however, that this still represents excellent value for money - especially when compared to many other local DB sports and activities – when put into the context of costs per month through the season .

We remain fully committed to ensuring that any player who wants to play will NOT be kept out of the game due to costs, and retain a small “bursary fund” to help support a limited number of players.
