2018 HKRU Charity Ball
An invitation from Robbie McRobbie, CEO Hong Kong Rugby Union:
Attached is a flyer for this year’s HKRU Community Foundation Charity Ball, to be held on Saturday 3rdNovember at HKCEC and featuring a live performance from legendary rockers Foreigner.
Funds raised from the evening are used to support programmes with the Po Leung Kuk, Hong Kong’s biggest educational charity, both in the classroom and on the sports field.
Our partnership with the Po Leung Kuk (PLK) began 5 years ago, based around the “Tackling Life” primary school programme which introduces boys and girls to touch rugby and encourages them to adopt a healthy lifestyle and positive values such as respect, teamwork, honesty and friendship; we now have 22 PLK primary schools in the Tackling Life programme.
In 2017 we sent the first all-star PLK primary school teams to compete in an International Touch Tournament in Beijing, and they returned again in 2018.
This year we have also started a programme with 2 of the PLK special needs schools, and together with 4 other similar schools they took part in our first Inclusive Rugby Fun Day in March.
Over the past 5 years we have organised summer trips for youngsters from the PLK residential care home to attend rugby camps in the UK, in 2017 and 2018 10 girls have joined the Kowloon RFC supported Tony Ho Camp.
Our annual summer beginners course for the PLK care home in Causeway Bay has established a link with the HKFC youth section, who very generously support the membership of those youngsters who wish to continue in the game.
At the last New Year’s Day Youth Tournament there were girls from the care home involved in every single girls match – Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19, and earlier in December 2017 one of those girls, Wong Sze Man, became our first international when she proudly represented the Hong Kong national Under 17 team in the Asia Olympic Youth Rugby Qualifier tournament in Dubai.
Truly amazing stories - we really believe that the partnership between the Hong Kong rugby community and the PLK is a great thing, helping youngsters realise their potential and go on to make a positive contribution to our society.
I hope you can join us at the Ball, and help support a great cause by having a great night!
